Riding a bicycle is one of the activities that children enjoy the most, whether in summer with the sun or in autumn, while bundled up. With the bicycle they explore, play sports, stay active and enjoy the city, the park or nature.
However, we must follow some tips to choose the bicycle that best suits our little one. Attention!
1. The measurement of the child compared to the size of the bike
In many places what they usually do is give you standard measurements based on ages and weights. There are times when this does not correspond well to reality, since your child may have been able to grow a lot compared to other children his age, or the other way around.
The standard measurements that usually exist are:
- For children from 3 to 6 years old or a height of 90 to 120 centimeters.
- For children from 6 to 12 years old or a height of 120 to 155 centimeters.
You must take into account the size of your legs and the size of the bike wheel, therefore, in the following table you can see the most suitable measurements. To calculate the size of the legs you have to measure from the groin to the end of the ankle.
2. Choose the size with the child mounted
Finding the bike that best suits him is much simpler if the child is riding it, because we can also check how the size of the bike suits him. To do this we have to:
- Put the child on the bike, and let him hold the handlebars. They have to get a good grip to be able to use the brakes freely (and safely).
- The sole of the child's foot must touch the ground.
3. Good security measures
It is very important that the bicycle for our children complies with correct safety measures:
- If possible, wear a chain guard to avoid snagging. This is important since snags with the chain usually lead directly to falls.
- That the braking system is as good as possible.
- Do not choose a bike larger than what you need “for when you grow up.” It can physically harm them, destabilize them and, consequently, cause them to fall.
4. Adaptable handlebars and saddle
Within the measurements that are appropriate for your height and the size of your legs, you must try to ensure that the handlebars and saddle can be adjusted in height. The measurements are not exact and have a margin of centimeters that may vary. If we choose that both things are adaptable, we will be giving the little one comfort and increasing his level of security.
5. The helmet!
Once we have chosen the best bike for our little ones and the one that best suits them, it is important to instill in them the use of helmets from the moment they start using it.
The helmet we choose must be compact, resistant to shocks (obviously), with ventilation openings and light so that it does not weigh too much and in summer it does not overwhelm them with the heat. Any helmet must have a harness that must be attached at all times.
