Reggio Emilia Activities for Toddlers: Provocations and Play

Reggio Emilia activities for toddlers are less a fixed method than an open way of inviting children to explore, and that is exactly what makes them so usable at home. The approach takes its name from a town in northern Italy, Reggio Emilia, and its founding figure is Loris Malaguzzi.

Malaguzzi began with a difficult question: what image do I have of the child? His answer was deeply optimistic. He described children as full of riches and resources from birth, all gifted, creative and inventive, carrying an extraordinary potential that never stops surprising adults.

This article is not an exhaustive presentation. It is a simple sharing of activities inspired by what I read and understood, offered as an experience rather than a rigid doctrine.

Quick takeaways

  • Treat Reggio as an experience, not a fixed method.
  • See the environment as a teacher: rich, varied, attractive.
  • Offer provocations that stay open and free to use.
  • Mix materials and textures instead of separating subjects.
  • Value the creative process, not only the final result.
  • Keep loose parts and a simple mirror or light table on hand.

The Guiding Principles of the Reggio Approach

Reggio is best understood as an experience rather than a frozen pedagogy. Its principles are starting points, not rules, and they overlap in practice. Listening and human relationships come first, because learning grows out of exchanges between children and adults.

The environment is treated as a teacher in its own right. A rich, diverse setting brings in many materials, many techniques and the simultaneous thinking of hands and brain. Transgression matters too: doubting the most rigid truths, and cultivating imagination, opens the possibility of thinking differently.

There is also an aesthetic dimension, a capacity to reveal the essential from new angles by bringing apparently distant elements together. If you enjoy playful, well-designed materials, the spirit is close to what you find in a good 9 month old toys selection, where texture and openness matter more than a single intended outcome.

One Hundred Languages

The roots of knowledge are multiple and the learning process is not linear. Writing, painting, theatre, photography, speech and puppetry all carry their own expressive power, with no hierarchy between them. Complexity follows: connections are not given, the child must make them or live them, and images, sound, smell, light and touch strengthen the perception of how things link together.

Provocations: An Invitation to Explore

What I like most in this approach is the idea of an invitation, or provocation. You invite the child to create by placing objects and materials within reach, to provoke thoughts, questions, discussions, interests or ideas. The aim is to invite children to explore the material and express themselves.

A provocation can be very simple, just a photo or an object set on a table. It can be more elaborate, for example a table holding recycled materials beside a book about robots and a diagram for building a robot from that material. What matters is that it is presented attractively, with emphasis on the beauty of the thing.

Provocations must stay open and free to use. If the child does not follow the goal you had in mind, that is not a problem: some learning, creation or discovery still happened, just not the one you planned. This open-ended logic is close to the thinking behind the importance, where the process matters more than a finished result.

Keeping a few simple, sturdy items on hand helps you set these invitations up quickly. A basket of everyday objects often does more than an elaborate kit, and it echoes the practical spirit of a good classroom prize box stocked with small, versatile pieces. The same open-ended spirit applies at home, as when grandparents follow the same rules and choose toys like the best toys that invite exploration.

Element What to provide Why it matters
Provocation One object or photo on a table Sparks questions and ideas
Loose parts Jars of stones, beads, feathers Free combination and reuse
Light and reflection Mirror, homemade light table New angles on colour and shape
Mixed media Clay plus small found objects Hands and brain working together
Adult role Observe, then follow requests Keeps exploration open

Mixing Materials: A Clay Session

I also like the idea of the hundred languages and of understanding things in their complexity, without chopping them into separate slices. That is why the approach mixes methods, materials and textures. One example was a clay session with my daughter.

I gave her a ball of clay and told her she could ask for more if needed. Around her I placed several bowls with different elements: one with one-cent coins, one with wooden spikes, one with corn kernels and cloves, one with pieces of fir branch. She was free to choose among these proposals.

After several constructions she made and unmade, she asked what clay was originally used for. I explained that it was used to make dishes such as glasses, vases or plates. She then wanted to make glasses and vases, chose to let them dry so she could paint them the next day, and even gave one to a friend for her birthday: a genuinely original, handmade gift. Mixing in loose, found objects works the same way as a thoughtful German Shepherd toy basket, where variety invites experimentation rather than a single prescribed use.

Setting Up a Reggio-Inspired Corner at Home

At home I set up a small table for Reggio-inspired activities. On it I placed a mirror, a homemade light table made from a plastic box with an LED garland inside, and jars holding loose parts: chestnuts, conkers, acorns, pebbles, polished stones, transparent beads, water beads, corn kernels, feathers.

Loose parts are detached or free pieces left at the child's disposal, so they can be moved, combined and reinterpreted. A mirror adds a second angle to every object, and the light table changes how colours and translucency are seen. The point is not to fill the table but to keep it attractive and changeable.

The same attention to a well-prepared space applies to the rest of the home. A tidy, reachable shelf, a few rotating baskets and a clear surface are enough. Even a simple routine like sitting the baby near the table while an older child works keeps everyone included in the same calm atmosphere.

The Role of the Adult and the Process

In Reggio practice you can let experimentation run free, offer invitations or provocations, or accompany the child according to their requests. The adult observes first and intervenes lightly, following the child's lead rather than directing the scene, much as when you consider what role children play in a family celebration.

Process matters as much as the final work. Instead of considering only the finished piece, the approach is interested in the creative process; the two intertwine and both feed creative invention. Photographing a construction before it is taken apart is one small way to honour that.

Hope and faith in the future complete the picture: the future is full of possibilities, and something unexpected, surprising or provoking will come out of the connections a child creates. This optimistic frame is what makes the approach feel generous rather than demanding, and it sits comfortably alongside the wider message of why children want to revisit and repeat the same play again and again. The same spirit of unhurried, open-ended time carries over to rural houses near Barcelona where children can explore freely.

My hands-on take

In practice, I learned to prepare less and observe more. My clay session started as a simple invitation, and it turned into a conversation about what clay is for, then into glasses and vases drying on a shelf, then into a birthday gift. None of that was planned, and all of it came from following my daughter's questions.

The small table with the mirror and the jars of loose parts is still the most used corner of our home. Some days it holds chestnuts and pebbles, other days just a photo. I keep the rule simple: make it attractive, leave it open, and let the child decide where it goes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special equipment for Reggio-inspired activities?

No. A mirror, a few jars of loose parts and a simple table are enough to begin, and household or natural objects work well.

What if my child ignores the provocation I set up?

That is not a failure. The child still learns, creates or discovers something, just not what you had planned, and that is part of the approach.

Is Reggio only for art activities?

No. It covers many expressive languages, from painting and clay to speech, photography and puppetry, with no hierarchy between them.

How often should I change the setup?

There is no fixed rule. Refresh it when interest fades or when your child's questions point in a new direction.
