Nonviolent Communication: telling needs apart from strategies
This page may contain affiliate links.

Nonviolent Communication rests on one distinction that changes how we handle conflict: the difference between needs and strategies. Needs are universal, intangible and shared by every human being. Strategies are specific, concrete and different for each of us.

We all need freedom, for example, but how we live that freedom and satisfy the need is personal. One person might take two weeks away in the south of France or in Scandinavia, another might leave a job to travel the world, and another might move to an ecovillage. The list is endless, and none of these choices is the need itself.

Confusing the two creates many inner and interpersonal conflicts, because most clashes happen at the level of strategies, not needs.

Quick takeaways

  • Needs are universal and intangible; strategies are specific and personal.
  • Most conflicts happen at the level of strategies, not needs.
  • Every strategy satisfies some needs and leaves others unmet.
  • Ask "What do I feel?" and "What do I need?" instead of "Who is right?"
  • A need asks more to be recognised than to be satisfied.
  • Antagonistic needs can coexist inside one person.

What needs and strategies actually are

Diane Baran, a trainer in Nonviolent Communication, describes strategies as the means, the ways and the specific solutions we find to satisfy a fundamental human need. A need is never tied to one person, one object or one behaviour; it simply exists in all of us. A strategy is the particular shape we give it on a given day.

This matters because a strategy can be changed while a need cannot be argued away. When a child refuses to get dressed, the struggle is rarely about clothes. It is usually about autonomy, comfort or play, and those needs are legitimate. The children with genius in your house may simply be defending a need for choice.

Keeping the two separate helps us stop treating a preference as a universal truth. It also makes room for the kind of open-ended thinking that open ended toys encourage in children, where many solutions are possible.

Decoding a conflict through two kinds of needs

Take a real situation and describe it plainly, such as reaching for dessert when you are no longer hungry, or arguing with your partner about household chores. Then decode your behaviour, which is your strategy, against two sets of needs.

Needs the strategy satisfies

If you argue about a fairer division of chores, you probably need support, recognition, justice, order, cooperation, rest, communion and, at a higher level, meaning in the relationship. The strategy is doing something for you, which is why you keep returning to it.

Needs the strategy leaves unmet

The same argument means you are not living acceptance, harmony, understanding, respect, gentleness, connection, sharing, or self-esteem and esteem for the other. Naming both sides shows why the strategy feels necessary and unsatisfying at once. A little Waldorf method thinking helps here too: observe the behaviour before judging it.

Aspect Need Strategy
Scope Universal, shared by all humans Specific to each person
Nature Intangible, cannot be removed Concrete, can be changed
Example Freedom A two-week trip or a move abroad
In conflict Coexists with other needs Often the actual point of clash
What helps Recognition and listening Creative alternatives

Connection before action

The whole process of Nonviolent Communication invites us to put the accent on connection, on the bond, on the heart-to-heart relationship before any action. A conflict, whether inner or interpersonal, can be resolved at the level of needs. Needs can coexist as soon as we recognise them as needs and stop mistaking them for strategies.

From there we try to bring out creative solutions, which are the strategies, that satisfy needs which coexist but collide. Different and even antagonistic needs can live inside one person, not only inside a group. The parent who wants quiet and the parent who wants closeness are the same person.

Asking "Who is right? Who is wrong?" generates disagreement. Asking "What do I feel?" or "What do I need?" generates no conflict and moves us forward, as Baran puts it. That shift is as useful at bedtime as it is in a dispute over school uniform shoes, where practical needs and fairness needs often tangle.

Practising the distinction day by day

We can take time to absorb the list of needs as Nonviolent Communication frames it, and to read that list regularly alongside the emotions we feel. Translating our strategies into needs is a skill, and like any skill it improves with repetition rather than insight alone.

Then we can list creative strategies to take care of each need, remembering that a need asks more to be recognised and heard than to be satisfied. Being heard is often the whole remedy. This is why a calm conversation about baby sleep problems can defuse a tense evening faster than any new routine.

Try it with something small: a snack, a screen, a delay. Ask what need the strategy serves, and what need it leaves untouched. The answer is usually more honest than the argument that followed.

Where this helps most with children

Children feel the difference between a need and a strategy long before they can name it. When a toddler melts down over a toy, the need may be mastery, connection or rest, while the toy is only the strategy at hand. Offering another strategy, rather than arguing about the toy, respects the need and ends the standoff.

The same logic applies to sensory overload, which is why sensory toys can sometimes meet a need for calm that a conversation cannot. Movement works the same way: toys for psychomotor skills give a child a legitimate outlet for a need to move, instead of a reprimand for fidgeting. And on a long journey, travel toys are strategies for a need for stimulation and predictability at once.

None of this asks you to give in. It asks you to aim at the need and stay flexible about the strategy.

My hands-on take

I started using this distinction on the least dramatic conflict in my house: the after-school snack. My child would ask for something sweet, I would say no, and we would both dig in. One evening I stopped arguing about the food and asked myself what need the request was serving. It was not hunger. It was a need for comfort and a bit of control after a day spent following instructions.

So I offered a different strategy: choosing between two ordinary snacks, eaten slowly, with me sitting down. The request for sweets did not disappear, but the fight did. I now try the same move when I feel the familiar urge to prove I am right. I ask what I am feeling and what I need, and the answer is usually more modest, and more useful, than my argument was.

Frequently asked questions

Why does confusing needs and strategies cause conflict?

Because we defend a particular solution as if it were the only legitimate one. Others then defend a different solution, and the argument is really about strategies while the underlying needs are shared.

Can one person hold two conflicting needs?

Yes. Needs that pull in opposite directions can coexist inside a single person, not only between people. Recognising both, instead of choosing a winner, makes creative strategies possible.

Does meeting a need always mean satisfying it?

No. A need often asks first to be recognised and heard. Being understood can ease the pressure long before any concrete solution is found.

How do I start practising this?

Pick one ordinary situation, describe what you did, then name the needs it served and the needs it left unmet. Repeat with the list of needs nearby.
