Alicia and Hugo are delighted with their swimming classes; Luis hopes to one day get a medal in taekwondo, like his father did when he was a child, and Laura and Blanca are taking their first steps with the racket so they can play with their mother. What do these sports give you, besides fun?
Should we sign him up for swimming?
It is one of the most complete sports that exist, and it will also save us some unease: if you know how to swim, the danger of us getting confused when there is a pool nearby is much lower. It was the reason that Alicia and Hugo's mother signed them up for swimming classes when they turned three years old. "We live in an urbanization with a swimming pool, and although there is a lifeguard and you always try to be attentive, anyone can get confused. And even more so with how these two move, they don't stop!", he comments. "What I didn't know is that they were going to like it so much. They are delighted with their classes. And although they still don't practice any specific style, rather their own, they are already able to stay afloat without the help of arm warmers or anything."
- What skills does it enhance: psychomotor skills, coordination, resistance, synergy of body movements, discipline.
- What parts of the body it develops: upper body, central area of the body (core) and lower body.
- At what age can you start practicing: between three and four years old, although you can do activities in the water beforehand to become familiar with it.
Reasons to choose martial arts
Perfect for releasing tension and learning discipline while having fun meanwhile. With them you also practice decision, patience and concentration. Just like tactical-strategic thinking, having to resolve a situation in a matter of seconds. Along with swimming, it is one of the most complete sports. Javier, who had very good memories of the judo classes of his childhood, enrolled his son Luis, 5 years old, in taekwondo and it seems that the little one has inherited his sporting tastes. "Actually, I think I wrote it down because I was nostalgic. I remember that I loved it when Tuesdays came, which was the day I went to judo. And the happy face when I picked up a medal, which maybe was for attendance because I don't remember having won anything, but since my mother still has that photo in the living room, I keep it in mind," he says. "What I was not aware of is how much the body develops with this type of sport. It is very noticeable to Luis that he has gained in agility. And in flexibility, he looks like rubber!", says Javier.
- What skills does it enhance: development of resistance, strength, flexibility, concentration, discipline. Through this sport they also begin to better understand the meaning of integrity and honesty.
- What parts of the body it develops: the whole body, but we can highlight the flexibility of the extremities.
- At what age can you start practicing: at five years old.
Or should we choose tennis instead?
More and more children are joining this sport wanting to emulate Nadal and other greats, although only a select few will ever compete professionally. For the rest, it is a fun and exciting activity with which you also begin to practice the use of instruments - in this case the racket. Laura, an amateur tennis player since she was a child, wanted to instill in her daughters her devotion to this sport, and in the process keep them active. "I had the impression that when we were little we were playing and moving all day because we didn't stop at home. That's easy in a town, but in a city they don't have as much freedom. In fact they spend a lot of time at home, and there they spend more time watching drawings or playing with the console than anything else," he says, referring to his daughters, Laura and Blanca, ages 5 and 7. “With tennis they at least practice sports twice a week, and above all they gain a love for the sports routine, which was what I wanted,” he says.
- What skills does it enhance: coordination, speed, reflexes, motor skills.
- What parts of the body does it develop: arms and legs.
- At what age can you start practicing it: at five years old.
