How to make a recycled costume with old clothes 2026

With the excuse of Halloween and Carnival, children bring out their most hidden facets through costumes. The best of all is that children can create it to their liking and add all the accessories and colors they want. A perfect plan to spend an afternoon of crafts and games.

Apart from having fun creating their own costumes, making crafts will be a perfect activity for children to let their imagination fly and get away a little from the stress of routine. In addition, this type of activity can work as a valve to help the child develop patience, dexterity, and mobility of their hands.

If we choose to create a carnival or Halloween costume with them, they will also feel that their opinion is important (we can always ask them what they want to dress up as and make their dreams come true).

Making a costume with used clothes or with materials we have at home is quite simple and you don't need to be any craftsman. We show you that with a few materials, your little ones will be the kings of the party.

Necessary materials

• plastic bottles
• cardboard boxes
• Foams
• Egg cups
• Old clothes, gloves, hats and shoes that no longer fit
• Paintings
• glue
• Scissors
• ropes
• Anything you can use as a complement

How to do it

For this craft you do not need a “step by step”, since it is about letting your imagination fly. You can be inspired by the photos in this article: for example, a cardboard box can become a racing car, an airplane, a street market... With old clothes, sheets and scarves you can make capes and other accessories.

You can make a mask out of plastic bottles and decorate it with a crown, an old woolen hat, or big monster ears. And, for shoes, how about some foam claws glued on? Empty egg cups are also a lot of fun: they serve as monstrous eyes, and two empty bottles could be the perfect complement as self-propellants. If you have a capsule coffee maker, these are perfect for making necklaces and rings. What do you want some wings? Well, make them with cardboard and rope. With paints you can give the costume the final touch.

If you prefer to dress up for Halloween, the typical one is an old sheet over your head: you will be the most terrifying ghosts. Although we can also take advantage of a few rolls of toilet paper to wrap them around the body and be a perfect mummy.

By making their own costumes, children will learn the importance of recycling and how fun it is to make things yourself. They will have a great time creating costumes to represent their favorite characters, to show the result to everyone to play for hours and hours with them.
