Instagram user manual for teenagers 2026

In the era of millennials and generation Z, entering adolescence is synonymous with opening an account on all the social networks used in Spain.

And from the first “dad, mom, I want to open an Instagram profile” we have all the doubts that may cross our minds: is he old enough? Will you know how to use it well? To what extent can I protect your image as a minor?

As a general rule, it is better to learn and teach it to use it well than to avoid it. In a society in which social networks are so much the order of the day, nothing prevents that even if the minor does not have an account, they will not be published on Instagram. His friends can publish an image in which he appears and neither you as parents nor he will notice. That is why, even sometimes, preventing them from using it can lead to social marginalization.

Here comes the correct answer: if you do it together with parents or guardians, children will be able to discover the great advantages that Instagram offers and how to use the social network correctly and responsibly. In addition, it will help them learn to function correctly on the Internet.

If children are introduced to the world of Instagram early and without the consent of their parents, they will not be aware of all the issues related to cybersecurity and privacy that those who do do so with help will have been able to enjoy.

It is worth knowing that the application has a privacy tab with which you can access the settings to modify them according to preferences. Furthermore, whenever you suspect any type of harassment, you have the option to untag yourself, block or report conflicting posts.

To make the task easier, we have five questions that worry parents a lot when their teenager decides to open an Instagram account.

Because, at the end of the day, it is still a digital platform on which to share photographs, videos and moments and with which you can enrich yourself culturally speaking, as long as you know how to handle it with care and responsibility.

Why do you like Instagram so much?

Precisely because of what we just mentioned. They see in the social network a possibility to share all the moments of everyday life and witness what their friends share. Furthermore, they see in it a possibility of social communication through comments.

What is the minimum age to have a profile?

According to the uses of Instagram, it is allowed to open an account from the age of 14 but, as it does not ask the age when opening a new account, there are minors who do it earlier and without the consent of their parents. However, if Instagram is notified of the presence of a minor and it is proven to be true, the account will be closed.

Can we find risks when using it?

One of the big doubts that all parents fear is that their little ones will come into contact with a stranger through the application in order to get closer to them. Furthermore, the photos and videos that are published little by little build their public image and if it is not done in a responsible way, it will be more negative than we would like.

How can minors protect themselves on Instagram?

Taking care of what they publish because, as we have said, it will help form their public image. Furthermore, it doesn't hurt that they know that they don't have to publish provocative images or have inappropriate dealings with strangers.

Is it preferable for the minor's profile to be private?

Depending on each person's experiences, the application may be more or less positive. For many minors, getting followers is a goal when they open an account and, therefore, in this case, having it private will make the activity very difficult. Sometimes, even if the minor has a private account, if people post photos in which they appear publicly, it will do little good.
