The “pick up this and pick up that” are common scenes in many homes. Many times it seems that toys have a life of their own and end up being distributed throughout the house, appearing in unexpected places.
By applying a series of guidelines it is possible to have the toys organized and for the children to enjoy the game, which in the end is what it is about, for fun to coexist with order in the same space.
Shall we start?
1. Choose a space to allocate to toys. One that is visible, comfortable, accessible and at their height, a place that they can call their own. By having “their space” they will tend to play around it and this will help the toys not take over the entire house.
2. Make the child a participant in the organization. They are his things and his play space. Organize with him by choosing together where to place each thing.
3. Everything within reach. Make everything visible and within reach to make it easier for them to play and organize. You can use shelves or any storage system that allows them to access everything.
4. Make a good discard. Eliminate all those toys that you no longer play with, are broken or incomplete. Do the discarding with them and decide together which ones are donated or which ones are given away, it will be a learning experience for them.
5. Classify. Group toys by types or categories (cars with cars, constructions with constructions,...). As they are differentiated and each one in its place, you will be able to identify them without problem when you want to play as well as return them to their place when you finish.
6. Organize in boxes. Distribute the different categories of toys in boxes that weigh little and that can be easily opened and closed by them, this will help us maintain order. Avoid large boxes or trunks to store toys since they are sources of clutter and waste of time because every time they want to pick up something specific they will have to take everything out to find it.
7. Label. Whenever possible, put labels that identify what each box, drawer, etc. contains, in addition to helping them maintain order, you will teach them how to organize. If they have not yet learned to read, we can put images that represent the content.
8. Organize vertically. Many times we do not realize that the vast majority of things can be organized vertically. I recommend that you try board games or puzzles, this makes them visible, easier to access and return to their place.
9. Less is more. Most of the time children have too many toys and we see how they end up always playing with the same thing. It is advisable that they have an adequate number of things so that they learn to value and care for them. A very good option is to rotate their toys so that they focus more on the ones they have and help them appreciate things.
10. Teach him that picking up is part of the game. In reality, the game doesn't end until he has picked up. You have to make him understand that having the toys organized at the end of the day will help him resume the game at another time. For example, if you don't cover the temperas and sort them, the next time they will be dry and useless.
