What do dreams of pregnant women mean? 2026

The psychologist Patricia Garfield, author of numerous books related to dreams, says in the book Women's bodies, women's dreams that one of her clients dreamed that she had a grown son (without passing as a baby), something also common in pregnancy. The interpretation that is usually made of dreaming about a child who is born older is that the mother feels afraid or incapable of caring for a baby, however this did not agree with the interested party, who concluded that for her it reflected the fear she had of missing out on her child's childhood, since she worked all day. No one can understand our dreams better than ourselves. And they are exceptional therapy material.

So when it comes to interpreting the symbols that appear in our dreams, what gives us the real key to understanding what they want to tell us is the emotion they awaken. "The fundamental content is related to the emotional drag produced by the images in the dream," says clinical psychologist Rosa González. If we get in touch with the emotion it has generated and begin to pull the thread guided by the symbols, we will obtain valuable information.

They express common fears during pregnancy

Although the interpretation is personal, psychologist Patricia Garfield identified some of the most common dreams during pregnancy. Along with those already mentioned, we can find:

Driving a vehicle: Laura dreamed that she was driving a truck out of control. The size of the vehicle, according to Patricia Garfield, can be related to physical changes. But driving usually refers to the life project, says Rosa González: the runaway truck can reflect the woman's fear of losing control of her life during pregnancy or with the arrival of the baby.

Having relations with another man (or your husband with another woman): Sofia dreamed that she was flirting in a jeans store and hooked up with the clerk. Sensual dreams are common at this stage. Whether you are having a torrid affair or your husband is having it, the dream usually reflects the woman's insecurity about her attractiveness, now that her body is changing so much.

Water: Water is very present during pregnancy in the form of rivers, seas, taps... it is a symbol of life, normally the one we are gestating. Gema dreamed that she was bathing in a warm pool inside a cave, when the water began to go down at great speed and she felt afraid. "It seems that the mother has placed herself in the baby's place, she shows empathy. It can reflect the mother's fear of her baby's life outside, with how well he is inside," says Rosa González.

"Well, I don't dream": It's not that you don't dream, but that you don't remember, and it usually reflects control and fear of getting in touch with your own unconscious, with what is not concrete or logical.
