Until now, any association between height and the ease of giving birth was unknown but it was presumed that, in general, short women tend to have more difficult births than tall women. Now, European researchers have identified physical aspects of the human body that appear to facilitate this obstetric dilemma. The study suggests that the shape of a woman's pelvis is associated with her height and head size. Specifically, it demonstrates that women with large heads or those of small stature have a pelvic cavity that is more adapted to giving birth to large babies. Between four and five million years ago, hominids began to walk upright. As a result, the women's pelvis narrowed to ensure better locomotion when walking. Once bipedal movement was established, the size of the brain increased considerably, and with it that of babies at birth. This is the reason for the lack of space in the birth canal of modern humans during childbirth.
Women have not generally developed a wider pelvis throughout evolution. Given the lack of adaptation, a team of European researchers is looking for connections between the size of the pelvis, height and the size of a woman's head.
Women with the most adapted birth canal
Scientists show that head circumference, on the one hand, and height, on the other, do not vary independently: they are linked to the shape of the pelvis. “Women with large heads, compared to those with small heads, have a birth canal adapted in some way so that neonates with large heads can pass through more easily,” says Barbara Fischer, researcher in the Department of Biosciences at the University of Oslo (Norway) and lead author of the work.
For this evolutionary biologist, this makes a lot of sense because head size is inherited. “Women with big heads tend to give birth to babies with big heads,” says Fischer, who points out that this adaptation contributes to improving the time of birth. The sacral bone, located above the tailbone, is shorter in these women so it leaves more space in the birth canal for the baby.
Why do short women have better pelvises for giving birth?
On the other hand, both women and men with smaller heads have a more oval-shaped pelvic cavity, which makes childbirth more difficult. The same goes for tall people who tend to have a less round pelvis.
In the case of short women, the study shows that they have a rounder pelvis than those of tall women, which is the result of an adaptation to strong selection pressure at birth. “The round pelvic cavity that we have discovered in small women, which is beneficial for giving birth, has also been observed in small men,” says Fischer.
According to the expert, both the shape of the pelvis, the height and the circumference of the head are “genetically determined.” "Some combinations of these characteristics are genetically connected through evolution, and if they are favorable, they are repeated in the future. This is what we believe has happened during human evolution with the pelvis, head size and stature," Fischer observes.
Despite having identified these patterns, the researchers clarify that the individual risk of a complicated birth "depends on several environmental and genetic factors," the scientists conclude.
