Nonviolent Communication: How to Respond to Orders With Respect

Nonviolent Communication gives you practical tools to respond to orders without escalating conflict. Demands do not tolerate a "no": in everyday life they function as orders rather than genuine requests, and that distinction matters when you are on the receiving end.

Developed by Marshall Rosenberg, Nonviolent Communication (often shortened to NVC) contrasts two metaphorical modes: the "jackal," a defensive, critical or aggressive way of speaking, and the "giraffe," the empathetic, honest and cooperative approach. Understanding both helps you stay grounded when someone issues a command.

This guide walks through the typical jackal reactions to orders, the giraffe alternatives Rosenberg suggested, and why you should not take an accusing message personally.

Quick takeaways

  • A demand leaves no room for "no"; a true request does.
  • The jackal reacts with frontal refusal, a contradictory sigh, or a yes that buys love.
  • The giraffe listens, names feelings, makes requests and stays empathetic.
  • Look for the unmet need inside an accusation instead of taking it personally.
  • Rosenberg offers ready-made phrases to ask for thanks and recognition.
  • Practice giraffe language in small, everyday moments first.

What Orders Sound Like and Why They Matter

A demand is not a request. When someone says "do this" in a way that leaves no room for refusal, the message lands as an order, and the person hearing it often reacts defensively. Recognizing this pattern is the first step toward a calmer response, whether the order comes from a partner, a colleague or a relative.

In NVC, Rosenberg uses the jackal as a metaphor for communication that is critical, defensive or aggressive, and the giraffe for communication that is empathetic and kind. The jackal hears almost every request as an order. The giraffe pauses, listens and looks for the need underneath. This same listening posture helps in many tense family moments, much like the reflection needed when a child calls from a trip and wants to come home and needs reassurance rather than a lecture. The same gentle attention applies to everyday care, as with choosing a good comb for a child.

Why the distinction matters

If you treat every request as an order, you either fight it or swallow it. If you treat it as information about someone's need, you keep your freedom to choose your answer.

The Three Jackal Responses to an Order

Rosenberg describes three typical jackal reactions from people who hear every request as a demand. The first is the frontal response: "I am not your slave." It is direct, reactive and usually escalates the tension instead of resolving it.

The second is the double-signal response, where the verbal message contradicts the non-verbal one: "Okay, I'm coming," said with a heavy sigh. The words agree while the body protests, and the other person senses the resistance. The third is the jackal who says yes to buy love: "Of course I'm coming." This person cannot say no, out of duty or to prove they are a loving person. Over time this pattern risks overload and eruption after absorbing everything silently. Parents often fall into this trap, especially when sleep deprivation wears down their patience. It connects to broader debates about controversial parenting issues where saying no feels like failing, and to the reminder that children improve our lives rather than demand perfection.

Spotting your own pattern

Most of us default to one of these three. Naming it is the beginning of choosing something else.

Situation Jackal response Giraffe response
Receiving a command "I am not your slave" "I would like thanks for what I did"
Disagreeing with a method Silent resentment "There are several adequate ways to do this"
Feeling criticized Sighing while agreeing "I would like recognition for trying"
Hearing an accusation Counter-attack Look for the unmet need
Wanting to say no Saying yes to buy love Honest, empathetic refusal

Switching to Giraffe Language

Rosenberg offers several formulations for answering orders in giraffe language. Instead of attacking, you name what you would like: "I would like to receive thanks for what I did rather than criticism about how I did it. If I receive at least one thank-you, I will be more open to hearing advice on how to do it better."

Another option: "I would like you to acknowledge that there are several adequate ways to do things." You can also say, "I would like recognition for having tried, and thanks even if you do not like my work." A fourth formulation: "Can you tell me your way of doing things without using words that imply you are the one who is right? That would be easier for me."

To answer a jackal's demands, the giraffe listens, expresses feelings, makes requests and stays empathetic. The giraffe knows how to assert itself and does so honestly. This is the same calm honesty that helps when you return to work and must state clearly what you need from others.

Listening for the Need Behind the Accusation

A jackal is always looking for giraffe ears to help decode what it is trying to express. When someone sends you an accusing message, look for the grain of truth: the unmet need hidden inside it. The accusation is rarely about you; it is a clumsy signal of something the other person lacks.

Using giraffe language, you aim to build communication based on understanding and cooperation rather than conflict and confrontation. That shift takes practice, and it helps to remember that children learn this tone from us. The way you speak during everyday care routines, such as when you baby bites breastfeeding and must stay gentle, shapes how they handle frustration too. Likewise, understanding why children resist bedtime can reveal the unmet need behind their protests, just as knowing how indulgence shapes personality helps you respond with empathy rather than accusation.

For further reading, Rosenberg's book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life (originally published in French as Les mots sont des fenêtres) develops these ideas in depth.

Practicing Giraffe Language Day to Day

Giraffe language is a habit, not a switch. Start with low-stakes moments: a request to hurry up, a comment about how you loaded the dishwasher, a reminder you have heard many times. Pause, name your feeling, and make a clear request.

With children, the same approach works. When a child issues a blunt order, reflect the need back: "It sounds like you really want this now." Modeling that response teaches them there is an alternative to the frontal or sighing reply. Everyday moments, like getting everyone out the door or taking the baby on a, are perfect low-pressure rehearsals.

Expect setbacks. The goal is not to be a perfect giraffe but to notice when the jackal shows up and gently return to honesty and empathy.

Nonviolent Communication: How to Respond to Orders

My hands-on take

I first tried giraffe language during a heated moment over chores, and my instinct was the frontal jackal reply. Instead, I paused and said I would like a thank-you for what I had already done before hearing advice on the rest. It felt awkward, but the conversation shifted from blame to something workable.

What helped most was practicing in small moments rather than waiting for a big conflict. I now catch myself mid-sigh and rephrase. I am far from a perfect giraffe, but noticing the jackal is already half the work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a request and an order in NVC?

A request leaves the other person genuinely free to say no without punishment or guilt. An order carries an implicit threat of blame or withdrawal of affection if refused.

Can I use giraffe language with my children?

Yes. Naming feelings and making clear requests models the behavior you want them to learn. It works best when you stay calm and consistent.

What if the other person keeps issuing orders?

Keep expressing your feelings and requests honestly without attacking. Over time, consistent empathy often lowers the tension, though change may be slow.

Do I have to agree with the other person to respond nonviolently?

No. You can hold your own view firmly while still listening for their need. Assertiveness and empathy are not opposites.
