Causes of hiccups in babies
Hiccups appear when the diaphragm contracts involuntarily, abruptly and repeatedly. This diaphragm is a muscle that separates the lungs from the abdomen and it is thanks to it that we can breathe.
With breathing, the diaphragm moves from top to bottom and this helps us empty and fill the lungs. When we hiccup, instead of inhaling air, we exhale it and at the same time the vocal cords also close, which is why the characteristic “hiccup” sound is heard.
Virtually all newborns have hiccups, which are especially common during the first 6 months of life. In fact, babies can hiccup even before they are born: some pregnant women feel their fetus hiccup as early as 2 months inside their uterus.
Generally, hiccups in babies last longer than in adults, although they usually disappear between 10 and 15 minutes and the baby recovers normal breathing. It is a natural phenomenon and it is not known for sure what causes it, although there are many theories about it. Some of the most accepted are:
- Immaturity of the baby's nervous system. The person in charge of controlling the muscles of our body is the nervous system, therefore, when any irritation occurs in the phrenic and vagus nerves, unwanted movements can be generated in the diaphragm.
- Immaturity of the baby's digestive system. Some reasons related to them are the following: distention of the stomach, having difficulty holding the nipple (which favors the entry of air), the use of inappropriate teats that make breastfeeding difficult, the use of pacifiers that cause hiccups to appear due to their shape, reflux, changes in body and gastric temperature, and emotional stress or anxiety.
What can we do?
- Avoid sudden temperature changes.
- Feed the baby when he is calm and without being very hungry. This way he won't eat quickly and swallow too much air.
- If you have hiccups while eating, it is best to change your position (the ideal posture is upright). We can also try to burp him and help him relax. One remedy may be to give him a pacifier to help him relax.
- Wait for the hiccups to pass before continuing to feed them. If it hasn't gone away after 15 minutes, we can give it a few tablespoons of water.
- Let him rest once he has finished eating and avoid violent movements.
