The Spanish Society of Clinical Immunology, Allergology and Pediatric Asthma (SEICAP) warns in a statement that children allergic to cow's milk proteins cannot drink goat's milk. "Some publication has reached us in which it was said that goat's milk is a good nutritional contribution for children with certain problems, and among those problems included an allergy to cow's milk," says Dr. Ana María Plaza, president of the SEICAP. “Goat milk can be a good nutritional contribution, but many of the proteins it contains are very similar to the proteins in cow's milk,” adds Dr. Plaza.
Therefore, children who suffer an immediate allergy, that is, who have symptoms minutes after ingesting dairy products (always within an hour), have a very high risk of presenting the same reaction or even a more significant reaction when drinking goat's milk or sheep's milk.
Allergy to milk proteins can cause different types of reactions: skin (more or less intense hives, edema of the lips and ears), respiratory (sneezing, intense mucus, respiratory difficulty), digestive (vomiting after drinking, abdominal pain, soft stools) and in the most serious cases it can cause a combination of all these symptoms. When a combination of symptoms occurs and therefore more than one organ is affected, doctors speak of anaphylaxis. The maximum degree of anaphylaxis produces anaphylactic shock, a condition that can cause immediate death.
They can't eat cheese either.
Children allergic to milk proteins should also not eat goat and sheep cheese. On the other hand, most children allergic to cow's milk do tolerate cooked beef because after cooking the proteins are processed (raw meat may be contraindicated) and do not usually cause allergic reactions.
"We were notified of the publication of this news by a mother: the child's grandmother was already going to buy goat milk because she had read about it in a magazine, and this mother called us scared, which is why we wanted to make it clear that children with an actual allergy to cow's milk proteins cannot drink other types of mammalian milk," says Dr. Ana María Plaza.
