Among other data to take into account, on many occasions we need to compare the “ways of being” of animals to ours to proceed with their choice. Therefore, the following classification, according to our human way of understanding things (anthropomorphism), may help us a little more to make the correct decision:
· The “quiet” species. They are rats, mice and guinea pigs.
· The “affectionate” species. They are not so called because of their ability to give affection, but rather because of their stoic ability to receive or accept the effusive displays of their owners, in this case children. They will be the chinchilla and the dwarf rabbit. By this we do not mean that they can be hugged and rubbed continuously. We must regulate their effusiveness.
· “Playful” species. They are rats and mice.
· “Nocturnal” species. This data is not exclusively anthropomorphic, it is real and interesting to know. Depending on the type of habits (nocturnal or diurnal) of the animal, we can assess whether we will be able to interact with them during the day or just know that they are at home by their sounds while we rest. They are the chinchilla, the hamster and the mouse.
They must intervene in the tasks
There is a large population group to which these pets are usually intended as the first option: children.
The simple care of this type of animals, the few resources they require and their affordable price make small mammals an appropriate choice for the little ones in the home to come into contact with other types of living beings other than those with “two legs”.
But before assessing which of these animals may be most suitable for younger ones, let's not forget that our children must intervene in the care, take on certain responsibilities... but always supervised by adults. Burdening a child with full responsibility for caring for one of these animals can cause great disappointments, even undesirable problems.
Owning pets of this type, supervised by an adult, will provide the child with great values. A contrary or different situation will show us the absurdity of our error.
Rabbits and guinea pigs are the most suitable
Among the small mammals most suitable for the little ones are rabbits and guinea pigs. These animals are easy to care for, active during the day, of a size and behavioral characteristics that allow them certain exchanges of affection.
Chinchillas and Korean squirrels are more “special” in their care, and therefore should be under the direct supervision and responsibility of (responsible) adults.
Finally, rats are usually one of the small mammals chosen as a priority by young people and adolescents.
One of the facts that we must not forget when choosing our future friend is his life expectancy. Knowing the average time that we will be able to share with the chosen animal is essential to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Before acquiring one or another animal, it is best to find that there are great differences between the different species. It is not the same to consider living together for between two or three years with a hamster, or up to eighteen with a chinchilla...
