IF you are a father or mother, you will have already realized that not all drawings are the same. While some are created with the mere purpose of entertaining, others can help the little ones establish concepts and understand things appropriate to their age. In fact, here we were talking about the most educational cartoons.
And there are also drawings that are more controversial than others. This is the case of the famous 'SpongeBob SquarePants' series which, curiously, is one of the ones that has had the most followers for quite some time. Well, despite that, it seems that he is still in the spotlight for different reasons.
And back in 2011, a study was published in the journal Pediatrics that we seem to have overlooked: different researchers from the University of Virginia, in the United States, concluded that SpongeBob SquarePants could cause attention deficit and difficulty solving problems in young children. And why did they conclude this? Well, perhaps, by chance.
A series too fast for young children
Scientists wanted to check the impact of television series on children to reach the conclusion if, truly, there are some series that are more 'harmful than others'. To find out, they selected a group of sixty children and divided them into three random groups. The first spent a while watching 'SpongeBob', the second 'Caillou' (drawings that, remember, have a slower pace). The third group, however, was given pencils to draw.
After a stipulated time of each group doing their homework, they were all given a series of activities to measure their mental acuity and it was here that the researchers came to the conclusion: the group that had been watching SpongeBob SquarePants had more accelerated behavior and presented worse results than the other two. Between the group that watched 'Caillou' and the one that drew, there were hardly any notable differences.
Despite the results, the author of the study, Angeline Lillard, told the BBC that the blame should not be placed solely on SpongeBob SquarePants, since it is just an example of how fast-paced series can affect children's development. In addition, she made it clear that it is the parents' responsibility to let them see or not depending on which drawings.
Nickelodeon's justification
Perhaps the researchers overlooked one thing that the creators of the series used to justify the results: SpongeBob SquarePants is intended for children between 6 and 11 years old, not for children four years old or younger.
Other controversies surrounding SpongeBob SquarePants
Beyond the results of this study, there are several controversies surrounding SpongeBob SquarePants. Starting with the opinion of Ukrainian educators when they called it unsuitable for children. Why? Because they considered that the characters did not have appropriate behaviors for young children. They spoke, specifically, of the 'special friendship' that united SpongeBob and Patrick: something that the network already confirmed a few months ago by shouting from the rooftops that the characters belonged to the LGTBI collective.
Furthermore, another study carried out a few years ago by the University of Granada also claimed that in the series there are words, expressions and actions that are too violent for children.
