Is it good to use a pacifier to sleep? 2026

From the beginning of their life, every time they cry. However, they don't need to suck, they don't need to feed. They need to fall asleep.

If we have accustomed our child to using a pacifier, due to the deformation caused by prolonged use, we have to tell him that he must "say goodbye to it." We do not ask him if he wants to stop, but we explain that he has to stop: "You are no longer old enough to use a pacifier."

How do we put down the pacifier?

Giving up a pacifier has to be traumatic, but some children find it especially difficult. They cling to it to calm their anxieties, just like other children hug a teddy bear. The problem is the pacifier.

The child accepts these detachments if we teach him to leave the object that must be detached from as soon as possible. Children leave their companion objects sooner during the day than at night. As they grow and gain self-confidence, they leave behind the objects that provided them with a substitute for emotional security. But, if for whatever reason, they have prolonged the use of certain objects excessively, we have to help them put them down.

Much love and understanding

It is important to count on the child and let him know that we are offering him something that he can achieve, even if it costs him. This way the child has our understanding and our support, encouraging him to take another step in his growing process. The pacifier disappears, he leaves it, he throws it in the trash, he gets rid of it because it is harming him. We help you take the step, encouraging you. You have to accept that it is difficult for him and not give him a pacifier again when he has gotten rid of his. In a few days you get used to it.

Tips for getting rid of the pacifier

To help the child let go of the pacifier:

• Leave it gradually, first at nap time, then at night.
• Propose a date to quit.
• Let the child get rid of the pacifier, don't hide it from him.
• Accept that the child has a hard time sleeping without it the first few days.
