In current pedagogy there are different educational lines regarding the way in which the development and evolution of children should be facilitated. Until now a system has been carried out in which the adult is the child.
In contrast to this pedagogical line and, trying to avoid forcing learning situations on children, an educational method is proposed based on the child's own process in a natural way. It is not necessary to direct or guide him, simply let the child learn and grow as it comes naturally. The risk that we can run in this case is that the child may choose a path that is comfortable for him, but it may not be the best or completely optimal.
Parents, faced with these two positions, often have doubts about how to act and what educational style is best for their children due to fear of the risks that both systems can entail. That is to say, there is a fear, on the one hand, of forcing and blocking them due to that blockade and, on the other hand, there is a fear of leaving them too much freedom and that this could cause difficulties for them.
The important thing is to be able to reach a balance. Children need us at many times. In reality, they do not know how they should act, so it is good to be by their side, guide them and teach them how they should respond to different situations. To respect their way of being and give them certain freedoms, it is good to let them choose but with some control. We can give them different options and, given those options, they can choose the one they like the most or the one they feel most identified with. This way, we will know that whatever they choose are good options.
It is not only about letting them choose, but when they do so they must know how to reason and explain in an argued manner the reasons why they have chosen that option. This means that they do not do things without thinking but rather that they always reason and reflect on what they are doing. When we ask them the first time to justify their choice, they will not know how to do it. That is when we must be there and help them. It is not about giving them the argument but rather making them think about the different reasons why they have chosen that option. In this way we will provoke and activate their mental capacity to reason and justify. We cannot accept as valid answers such as: “I choose it just because,” or “because I want to.” Arguing the decisions made not only enriches you intellectually and cognitively but also makes you responsible for the decision to be made and the consequences of your choice.
Once they are able to decide and argue their decision, our job as parents is to accompany them along the way while they execute or put it into practice. This company will help them in case they get lost along the way and if they need help to achieve it.
Therefore, it is about making them grow and bringing out what each one has inside them in a free and responsible way. Accompanying them, guiding them and being by their side does not mean restricting them.
